Laos, the only landlocked nation in South East Asia, has a magical old world charm with one of the most pristine environments in the region. This land of mountains, mists and untamed natural beauty tempts with unrivalled peace and serenity. Development is picking up pace, but the country still has much of the tradition that has sadly disappeared elsewhere in the region. Village life is refreshingly simple and even in its capital, Vientiane, a sort of languid riverfront life still exist.
Not to be missed of course is the historic royal city of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage City. Luang Prabang is often described as the “Jewel in Laos' Crown”. This place has managed to preserve its natural splendor and still exudes an inherent charm. The sights of hundreds of saffron-robed monks moving silently among centuries-old monasteries is as romantic a scene as can be experienced anywhere in Asia.
There are also so much more to see beyond Luang Prabang. It is well worth it to explore the Plain of Jars in Xieng Khuang Province, the forested mountains of Northern Laos and the gothic limestone karsts around Vang Vieng. In the deep south, past the market town of Pakse, the mighty Mekong spreads out at Si Phan Don (Four Thousand Islands), a beautiful set of islands set against a lazy and winding section of the Mekong. This is the setting for the Khone Phapheng Falls, the largest waterfall in Southeast Asia.
Wherever one's journey in Laos takes them, no matter the duration, travelers will be in heaven as there are enchanting scenes waiting at every turn.
